US soft drink manufacturer Pepsi is to challenge Apple by giving away one billion songs, the Times has reported.

The company is believed to be ready to launch a year-long marketing campaign during which it will use Amazon to help distribute the music.

The paper reported the tunes will also be free from Digital Rights Management (DRM), which, despite blocking piracy, has also kept iPod users tied in to iTunes.

The music industry has had to embrace new distribution methods as more people use the internet to get their favourite music.

Radiohead released their latest album online, allowing people to choose how much they wanted to pay - it was reported the average amount was less than £3.

The British Phonographic Industry (BPI) said it is supportive of online opportunities that allow its members to give consumers innovative ways to buy music.

"UK record companies are making more and more music available for online retailers to license, and the recording industry has actively promoted digital music by first establishing a download chart and integrating the format into the official UK singles chart," it said.
