Mobile network operators will have to open their networks and new gadgets will change the market, according to new predictions for the internet in 2008.

The International Data Group (IDG) has released its vision of major changes for the new year and it thinks it will bring major developments in products and "the opening-up of closed business models to communities".

It predicts that open developments such as Google Android and the Open Handset Alliance will force open the mobile networks.

There will also be a raft of new gadgets following the industry trend towards giving consumers pre-packaged appliances.

"Following in the footsteps of Apple's iTouch and Amazon's Kindle, a new class of devices will fill the gap between notebook PCs and smartphones," it said.

In separate set of predictions, security analysts Webtense, has warned malware and viruses will be targeted towards specific groups within internet communities.
