Internet users are aware of online dangers but continue to put themselves at risk, a new study has warned.

Results from the research, conducted by PC Tools, suggests that users know that social networking sites, emails and downloads can cause problems. However, 50 per cent of UK consumers continue to download and file share despite the obvious dangers.

Simon Clausen, chief executive officer, said the public is exposed to financial loss and identity theft and thinks teaching is the only way to help.

"This research has confirmed our belief that the industry must approach computer security and cyber crime from an educational perspective," he said.

The survey had more than 25,000 respondents worldwide. Only eight per cent of visitors to the UK site were unaware of the risks of downloading, however, less than half scan their computer on a daily basis looking for spyware and viruses.

"All too often it takes an incidence of an attack involving identity theft or monetary loss for it to affect real behavioural change," he warned.
