The use of e-books will increase over time but requires a 'leap of faith', according to one publisher.
Amazon recently launched its Kindle electronic book reader to widespread acclaim however, Martyn Folkes, publisher at Mushroom Publications thinks people need to adjust to using it to read their favourite novels.
"A lot of people don’t see that you can read a book on a PDA, but I do it all the time. It just takes a few minutes to get used to it. People read them on their computers and also on laptops," he said.
He likened the internet to an electronic book and said devices like the Kindle could be convenient for publishers as "obviously carrying around an electronic reader rather than a bag of books is a big advantage".
Kindle links directly to the Amazon website and allows users to download latest releases for about £5, however it is not yet available in the UK.
Carnegie Mellon University has digitised 1.5 million books as part of its Universal Digital Library project, only one per cent of the total number ever published.
