A rise in international spying will pose the biggest single security threat in 2008, a top level report has warned.

The McAfee annual cyber security study found that "governments and allied groups are using the internet for cyber spying and cyber attacks". It also predicted an increased threat to online services and a new market for malware.

Jeff Green, senior vice president, said over the coming five years governments will have to take action against a threat that has become a global issue.

"It has evolved significantly and is no longer just a threat to industry and individuals but increasingly to national security," he warned.

There will also be an increased threat to personal data as criminals will target Voice over Internet Protocol (VoIP) services and look for ways to exploit social networking sites.

The report was conducted with input from Nato, the FBI and the Serious Organised Crime Agency (SOCA).
