The G-file

Web 2.0

Google wants to create a backup facility that allows people to store all their files on its computers, according to a report in the Wall Street Journal.

The facility would let users access their data from different locations, share them online and could be a further development towards web-based computing.

The paper cites people familiar to the matter saying Google would provide some free storage and the service could be released within a few months.

A spokeswoman for the company wouldn't confirm the development but said "storage is an important component of making Web [applications] fit easily into consumers' and business users' lives".

Hotmail's co-founder recently launched a challenge to the dominance of Microsoft's Office packages by releasing Live Documents which is available free online.

Fast data speeds are allowing internet users to share and collaborate on files in 'live' mode, instead of sending versions back and forward across the web.
