Dial-up is dead

Research from uSwitch.com has predicted the death of dial-up internet access, with only one in 25 people using the connection method by 2010.

The study envisages that in two years there will be 21 million UK households with an internet connection and that, because broadband prices are falling, dial-up will face the chop.

Steve Weller, head of communications services, says dial-up is out of date and is amazed that there are people who continue to use it.

"There is no way the slow, cumbersome dial-up connection will have a place in the home of the future where entertainment will be underpinned by the broadband connection," he said.

He also predicts that dial-up could be finished by the service providers if they would switch it off.

"We could then see the demise of dial-up brought even closer than 2010 as these connections are shut down and the decision is taken away from the last reluctant customers," he adds.

The government, Ofcom and senior telecoms executives are to meet and discuss how internet connection speeds in the UK can be improved to keep up with other countries.
