Hotmail's co-founder has launched an online challenge to the dominance of Microsoft's Office packages.
Sabeer Bhatia hopes to change how people get software and co-founded a Bangalore based company, InstaColl that offers internet based applications for free and hosts the system for companies.
"We are just a few years away from the end of the shrink-wrapped software business. By 2010, people will not be buying software," the Times reports him saying.
The company's Live Documents mirrors features of Microsoft Office and InstaColl say they are "creating a best-of-both worlds for scenario for end-users".
Microsoft has launched Office Live Workspace, an extension of Office that creates an online space where documents can be shared and worked on in collaboration with others.
Instacoll, in a snub to Bill Gates' company, remind visitors to their site of the source of their funding.
"That said, since Sabeer Bhatia is a co-founder, a very small part of the millions that he received from Microsoft for Hotmail.com funded our development efforts - so thank you Microsoft!," a note on the site reads.
