Ofcom has agreed to amend the radio spectrum licence held by UK Broadband Limited so the company can offer mobile internet connections.

The office concluded that the change would not reduce quality of the spectrum, however, four of the five mobile network operators opposed the decision. They said Ofcom should first clarify whether it would relax conditions on other parts of the spectrum.

"Ofcom believes that removing restrictions on the licensee will benefit consumers, encourage competition, optimise use of the spectrum and is therefore in the interests of citizens and consumers," the office said.

Google has expressed interest in the WI-Fi market and has already agreed to match the $4.6 billion price for a slice of US airwaves, the Times Online has reported.

More UK frequencies will be made available after television signals become digital. It is also possible that Google could make a future bid for part of the UK wireless market.

WI-Fi zones have been established all across UK giving people access to internet services on the move. However, users have been warned to take all possible security precautions when joining an open net.
