People over 50 take so well to using the internet that we are having to reassess our views about who we think the web is for.
Despite previous thinking that the internet is most popular with younger members of society, a number of studies have shown that older people spend longer online.
One study by Ofcom found that those people aged over 65 who used the internet, stayed online for longer. Justin Pearce, editor of New Media Age said the figures have made us change one term used to describe the group.
"The term 'silver surfers' is getting slightly archaic now, it was used to start off with because the internet was so new and old people weren't meant to use it," he explained.
He said that the classic use of the internet for this generation is to keep in touch with the world and their families.
Saga recently launched a social networking site – it could become a focus for advertisers who hope to target a generation known to have a large amount of disposable income.
