With fewer people still to convert to broadband the industry will see a slower growth in customer numbers, new research has predicted.
There will be roughly 21 million broadband lines in the UK by 2013 - 19 million will be for consumers and the remainder used by businesses. However, growth rates are down and will stay this way according to analysts, Point Topic.
Chief analyst Tim Johnson said: "We forecast that about four per cent of the remaining households without internet access will convert each year."
In the middle half of this year 880,000 consumer lines were added, half the growth experienced in the previous two quarters.
The survey estimates that by 2013 almost three-quarters of homes and 83 per cent of businesses will have a broadband connection.
Broadband is essential for transmitting large amounts of data and video files. Investment in higher speed connections could be essential if the internet continues to fill with video content.
