Niche moves

Smaller 'niche' social networking sites will never have the cash to compete with the biggest four but can still innovate, according to a leading exec.

YouTube, Facebook, MySpace and Bebo are the market leaders and are expected to reposition themselves as they 'play for users' while newer, more specialist sites add their own flavour.

Tim Gibbon of the Social Media Portal said that the current situation is similar to the search market and thinks there are still surprises waiting.

"You will have larger sites that cater for a wider audience, but you’ll have the niche sites that do something a bit different and that’s what will make things a little bit more interesting, and make certain websites stand out and possibly stand the test of time," he said.

Bebo recently opened up its platform to entertainment companies. It is one of several sites that have signed up to Google's OpenSocial platform and will feature content from CBS, MTV and the BBC.
