Google plays spectrum

It looks likely that Google is readying to support its Wi-Fi plans by making a multi-billion dollar bid for US airwaves.

According to the Times Online, a spokesperson for the internet giant said it was taking "all necessary preparations to become an applicant in the auction" and intends to reveal plans to the Federal Communications Commission (FCC).

Google has already agreed to meet the reserve price of $4.6 billion and has had two of its 'open access' terms agreed.

The UK will be selling space from its spectrum after television switches to a digital only signal. Google could express an interest in these frequencies as they can be used to provide internet services.

Ofcom hopes that an auction will promote competition and effective use of the UK spectrum, and allow frequencies to be tradable and used for new services.
