People searching the internet often input a domain extension, making those sites with a familiar dot com more visible.
According to one industry insider it's our familiarity with the internet that leads us to input the ending.
Domain names that have been registered for longer periods get pushed up the results list and get better ratings, says Macsen Galvin, Pipex Hosting’s development director.
"I think there’s certainly a hierarchy, and people are more likely to remember a ‘.co.uk’ or .com or ‘.net’ than a ‘.me.uk’," he said.
The extensions were initially used to segregate different internet categories and the prevalence of some endings can help online businesses.
"If you’re lucky enough to get your company name and then ‘.co.uk’ or ‘.com’… then people are more likely to stumble upon your site," he said.
The UK currently has 3.3 million registered domain names, Germany has 5.1 million and the US, a staggering 58.6 million.
