The man known as the father of the World Wide Web has urged mobile network operators to keep the web open to everyone.

Speaking at a conference, Sir Tim Berners-Lee, director of the World Wide Web Consortium, hoped operators would follow a set of mobile web standards and not claim the space for themselves, Macworld reported.

He insisted: "It has had to be universal. That's what is important to remember as we go into the mobile web. It's important to keep it universal."

Without pointing the finger at any one vendor, he criticised US mobile carriers for restricting users' access to specific online services.

Sir Tim thought that adoption of a set of standards would quicken development and hoped that hardware, software and content be as available as it is for wired services.

In Europe it is common for people to unlock their mobile phones and move from network to network.
