Prime minister Gordon Brown has announced the Home Office wants to work with the biggest web masters and tech firms to fight terrorism.
He revealed the plans in a statement to the House of Commons which set out future anti-terrorism measures. They include: improving security at rail stations, airport terminals, ports and sensitive installations.
"The home secretary is inviting the largest global technology and internet companies to work together to ensure that our best technical expertise is galvanised to counter online incitement to hatred," he said.
The announcement was made as part of the government's plan to isolate "extremist influences operating on the internet" and across society.
Many ISPs already have content guidelines and are active in removing some types of content. However, it is often difficult for them to assess if websites are entitled to post content under freedom of speech laws.
