Advertising within computer games will soon be worth billions of dollars, a top industry executive has revealed.

Citing research that suggests more people play games than watch television, Bernie Stolar, Google's so-called dean of games, said that games are not just played by 15 year-olds, they are enjoyed by all age groups.

Speaking to Gamesindustry.biz he explained: "So game publishers are very, very interested in this. We're talking with every major publisher, and there's a lot of excitement here."

He estimates that in less than three years, 80 per cent of games will feature advertisements. "This will be a billion dollar industry by the year 2010. That's big," he said.

Most new console games can be played on-line, offering increased interactivity for the player and further opportunities for advertisers.

Games now cost several million dollars to develop and gamers will be cautious about adverts that are irrelevant, or interfere with their gaming.ADNFCR-1093-ID-18355469-ADNFCR
