Big Facebook Brother?

Web 2.0

According to reports on Valleywag, the popular Silicon Valley blog, employees at Facebook have been violating members' privacy.

Claimed abuses vary from looking at which profiles members had viewed to logging into one user's account, changing the profile, and then sending fake messages.

The feature: Why Facebook Employees are Profiling Users, by Owen Thomas, draws attention to the company's privacy policy. It claims that despite agreeing not to share information with third parties, the policy fails to mention how private data can be used within the company.

Brandee Barker, director of communications, posted a response on Valleywag: "We absolutely respect user privacy and access to site usage and profile information is restricted at the company.

"Any Facebook employees found to be engaged in improper access to user data will be disciplined or terminated."

Microsoft recently gained a $240 million stake in Facebook following competition for the deal with Google. The corporation's deal to provide US advertising on the site has now extended, giving them international rights.
