MySpace shows its age

MySpace co-founder Tom Anderson has lied about his age according to information obtained by Newsweek.
When you join MySpace your profile is automatically linked to his and he becomes your first friend on the successful social networking site. However, his online profile lists his age as five years younger than Newsweek reveal it to be.
When the site was launched Tom claimed to be 27 years old. The information obtained by Newsweek gives his date of birth as Nov 8th 1970, making him 37 years old, not 32. If their sources are accurate then he was actually well into his 30s when he started MySpace.
Mathew Ingram, in a blog post on socialmediatoday.com, explained why people are making such an issue out of the story.
"I do think it’s interesting that he chose to lie about his age — possibly because of the Valley’s ageist approach to startups — and I think it probably will make some people more cautious about what they read on MySpace. And maybe that’s a good thing," he said.
Recent concerns about identity fraud have led people to be more cautious when revealing personal information online. Some email accounts allow users to create an alias, so as to disguise their real name and hopefully protect their privacy.
