Muslim lovers search for love online

The internet is an increasingly popular place for British Asians to find love without breaking Islamic law, the Times reports.

Online dating allows young British Asians to do their own matchmaking rather than rely on their parents to find them a suitable partner.

Shaadi.com, an internet dating agency with ten million members, has 700,000 of its customers in Britain. When Adeem Younis started singlemuslim.com he was worried how the service would be perceived.

"I thought traditionalists would be completely against the idea of an introduction agency, but the only opposition came from people who didn’t understand it or didn’t know what the internet is capable of," he told the Times.

Some Muslim families prefer for a marriage to be arranged and family members sometimes use the sites to look for a partner for one of their children.

A Japanese bank is taking a different approach, offering 'divorce loans' to provide funds to cover compensation and legal costs. If a divorcee is found responsible for the break-up they are on average expected to pay four million yen (£17,000) in compensation.
