Official 'social not-working'

Workers could be allowed time to spend on non-work related activities after a survey revealed the extent of 'social not-working'.

Employees are spending more than 40 minutes every day sending text messages, emailing and visiting social networking sites but are ignoring their personal finances, according to research by insurance company, AXA..

AXA's Pat Brady said: "With employees already spending some time on non-work related activities, giving them official time to take part needn't result in a hit on productivity."

The company is encouraging UK employers to give their employees their first hour at work to sort out their finances.

The Confederation for British Industry (CBI) and the UK's largest union, Unite, have supported the initiative and AXA has allowed its 12,000 employees to take part.

According to Bank Safe Online, a UK banking industry initiative, online banking is an "enormously popular and safe way to access your bank account".

Internet banking has increased the opportunity for customers in remote areas to access their accounts and online transactions have enabled small businesses accept orders from across the globe.
