Facebook goes mobile

Web 2.0

25 October 2007

Co-founder of Facebook, Dustin Moskovitz, has introduced a mobile version of the site and encouraged companies to develop in the website's platform.

Speaking at the Cellular and Internet Telecommunications Association (CITA) conference in California, he explained how a mobile phone camera could capture an event and relay it to the site where others could post comments.

Mr Moskovitz said: "I believe mobile is the next frontier in social networking."

He was joined by Mike Lazaridis, founder of Research in Motion, who announced the launch of Facebook for Blackberry Smartphones.

T-Mobile will be first to provide the service but any mobile from any carrier could download the application. Mr Moskovitz was also keen to stress the benefit both companies gained from having an open system.

There are currently 49 million members of Facebook - four million are engaged with mobile applications and 250,000 people join the site everyday.

The site has seen most of its growth in English-speaking countries and users have expressed concern about recent advertising agreements with Microsoft.
