Internet traffic from social networks to retailers increased by 153 per cent between December 2006 and September 2007.
Robin Goad, director of market intelligence company, Hitwise, revealed the details in his blog and said that auction sites have benefited the most.
He reported that 31.4 per cent of downstream traffic went to these sites and department stores and apparel and accessories sites received one in eight and one in nine visits, respectively.
"In terms of internet visits, social networking has grown by over 70 per cent in the UK since last Christmas, and it is starting to have a serious impact on many different types of website," he added.
Research showed that Facebook is now the fifth most visited URL in the UK and social networks are the fourth most popular source of traffic for shopping and classified sites.
The use of social networking sites is a global trend that offers huge possibilities for advertisers. However, members of their communities are not always keen to be approached directly and prefer using them for social activities
