YouTube has released filtering tools that can automatically remove
copyrighted movie clips from the site.

The tools will allow owners of copyright material to block their clips
or post them with accompanying advertising.

Videos that are uploaded will now be scanned and matched with a
database, a process that takes only a few minutes according to YouTube
product manager, David King.

Entertainment company Viacom, who are currently suing Google for $1
billion after the site showed thousands of clips that they owned, has
welcomed the move.

Mike Fricklas, Viacom's general counsel, said it is reviewing the new
service: "We're delighted that Google appears to be stepping up to its
responsibility and ending the practice of profiting from infringement."

YouTube currently issues a warning before showing any clip thought to
contain violent or mature content. The content is not blocked but
viewers must log in before viewing the clip.
