The Chinese government is planning to open a virtual shopping world that would allow visitors to place orders online.

The Beijing Cyber Recreation District will mirror the China Recreation Development (CRD) theme park currently under construction for the forthcoming 2008 Olympics.

Chief scientist of the virtual world, Chi Tau Robert Lai, explained how important the project is.

"We are stepping back and trying to blend the human and the computer to touch everything associated with people's lives," he said.

Maintained by the government the CRD will be a joint project together with Swedish firms MindArk and Paynova, as well as Germany's CryTek.

Registration for the cyber district would be free and it would also host cultural, corporate and educational events.

The Chinese government currently restricts access to certain types of information published online. However, the authorities have embraced commercial development and the country's economy is booming.
