A new US study has revealed that online shopping has rocketed in popularity, with 39 per cent of internet-using adults now making a purchase online at least once a month.
The iCrossing study, titled "How America Searches: Online Retail", revealed that while search engines remain popular as research tools, social media sites are also becoming more common as places for consumers to obtain information about the products and services they want to buy.
According to the study, 65 per cent of online shoppers carry out product research through search engines.
Meanwhile, 42 per cent of all consumers claimed that information about brands and products on sites like Wikipedia are extremely or very influential on their online purchase decisions.
Blog posts, online videos and brand profiles on social networking sites were found to carry significant weight with 18 to 44 year old shoppers, while 70 per cent of online shoppers said that internet reviews were extremely or very important factors in their decision-making process.
