Microsoft is considering buying a stake in social networking site Facebook in a move which could see the see the site valued at £5 billion.

It is believed that the world's largest software developer is contemplating paying between £149 million and £500 million for a five per cent stake in the popular social networking site, which attracts 200,000 new users a day and currently has 42 million people registered.

Figures released yesterday revealed that Facebook is now the most popular UK social networking site in the UK, outstripping MySpace.

The data published by Nielsen//NetRatings showed that Facebook received 6.5 million unique visitors in August, while MySpace had 6.4 million in the same month, with Facebook's membership rocketing by 500 per cent over the past year.

It is now being speculated that Microsoft's move to acquire a stake in Facebook will spark a bidding war which could see rivals Google and Viacom vying for a piece of the social networking giant.
