It is believed that Google is gearing up to trial a new online virtual universe based on Google Earth to rival the popular Second Life.
Arizona State University, which has significant connections with Google, has revealed that its students have been offered the chance to try out a new product "that will be publicly launched later this year", the Times reports.
It is being speculated that this product is Google's new virtual world.
The rumours were fuelled by a blog post by a partner at technology-focused venture capital group Benchmark Capital, Michael Eisenberg. He wrote that he had heard that Google was "working on turning Google Earth into a virtual world a la Second Life."
Mr Eisenberg added: "After hearing this, I was struck by the language on the Google Earth website: 'One more step to creating a lifelike 3-D model of the whole planet'."
Second Life, launched in 2003, has proved an enormous success, attracting over nine million users worldwide.
