In spite of the fact that the much-hyped Apple iPhone won't go on sale in the UK until November 9th, an estimated 1,500 visitors a second bombarded the O2 website following the announcement of the UK launch of the handset, causing the site to crash.
Customers hoping to be among the first to get their hands on the device by placing pre-orders for the phone encountered an error message on the network's retail site as a result of sheer demand for information.
"Due to extremely high demand, we're unable to process orders online at present," the website read.
An O2 spokesperson told PC Pro that the website had received more hits than it normally gets in one week.
On the other hand, Apple's website reportedly handled the demand much better, being more accustomed to surges in visits to its site following new product launches.
