Amazon.com and play.com have outperformed other online shopping websites, according to a new study by eDigital Research.

The 'e-retail index' tested the online shopping experience for customers over a seven-year period to conclude that the two websites offered the best all-round service, utalkmarketing.com has reported.

'E-mystery shoppers' visited the sites and purchased goods, then rated the websites across a range of factors, including initial impressions, web design, checkout procedures, customer service and product delivery.

Founding director of eDigitalResearch, Chris Russell, said: "We believe this research is the only one of its kind. Its advantages are that it charts e-retail right from its emergence into consumer popularity to its recent status as a primary route to market."

John Lewis, Boots.com, amazon.com and play.com came joint first for brand advocacy, while play.com was rated top for users' first impressions.

In July this year online shopping revenues surpassed £4 billion a month for the first time.
