Yahoo! is testing out a new social networking site called Mash, which could see it making its mark in the Web 2.0 movement - a trend that has seen the internet giant slightly left behind.

This is Yahoo!'s second attempt to get its foot on the social networking ladder, following its first effort, called Yahoo! 360, which failed to take off.

A limited number of public users were invested to try out the service on Friday.

In a similar vein to Facebook, the service allows Yahoo! users to interact and share personal information with friends and family.

A company statement said: "Ongoing product innovation is important to Yahoo! and we continue to test various products and services to gain feedback from our users. Mash, an experimental profile service, is an example of this ongoing testing."

Yahoo! has also announced that it has acquired blog information company BuzzTracker, which allows news topics to be tracked globally.
