Prince v YouTube
Web 2.0
14 September 2007
Prince is considering taking on the internet in a legal battle, arguing that a number of websites, including YouTube, encourage piracy of his videos and music.
The pop star has demanded that YouTube remove more than 2,000 videos that are currently uploaded on the site and is taking legal action in a move to "reclaim his art on the internet".
The musician has hired UK firm Web Sheriff - which monitors the internet for breaches of copyright - to assist him in his campaign. Web Sheriff has urged other stars to join the movement to crackdown on piracy.
"Very few artists have ever taken this kind of action over their rights," said a spokesman for Prince. "Yet Prince has shown time and time again he is ready to challenge the system in new ways to put artists and music first."
YouTube has promised that it will introduce video fingerprinting technology to scan videos for material protected under copyright.
