The humble local newspaper is attracting an unprecedented swarm of readers with the number of regional press websites rocketing by 25 per cent in 2006, demonstrating that the industry is increasingly using the web to reach a wider audience.

New figures released in the Newspaper Society Annual Regional Press Survey show that local newspaper websites are attracting an estimated total of 20 million unique users a month.

This means that collectively they are outstripping the BBC and are on a par with Yahoo! in terms of visitor numbers.

The survey revealed that the number of websites grew from 828 to 1102.

Newspaper society president Russell Whitehair, chairman of NWN Media Limited, said: "The regional press is growing and reaching new audiences across its print and digital platforms.

"Growth in local newspaper websites means they now collectively represent one of the top UK online properties."
